You can watch the full acknowledgement and learn more by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3Ls7JEGO6p8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">watching this video on YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Land acknowledgment engages all present in an ongoing indigenous protocol to enact meaningful, reciprocal relationships with ancestors and contemporary tribal nations. As a state university, we have a responsibility to include and support indigenous communities and sovereign tribes in our work.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the place George Mason University occupies, we give greetings and thanksgivings to these Potomac River life sources, to the Doeg ancestors, who Virginia annihilated in violent campaigns while ripping their lands apart with the brutal system of African American enslavement, to the recognized Virginia tribes who have lovingly stewarded these lands for millennia including the Rappahannock, Pamunkey, Upper Mattaponi, Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Nansemond, Monacan, Mattaponi, Patawomeck, and Nottaway, past, present, and future, and to the Piscataway tribes, who have lived on both sides of the river from time immemorial.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n          <\/div>\n          <!-- Start list of conference committee -->\n          \n        <\/div><!--\/inner-->\n      <\/div><!--\/thumb-->\n    <\/div><!--\/panel-->\n    \n  <\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<section class=\"article-wrap\">\n  <article class=\"article\">\n    \n    <div class=\"article__description\">\n      <p>We encourage SIGDOC participants to remember the colonial legacies of academic institutions as we engage with one another over the next few days, and to consider how our field might work toward a more just and equitable world through future research projects, community partnerships, and conference themes.<\/p>\n<p>As a conference organizing committee,\u00a0 we encourage attendees to see the land acknowledgement not as a static assertion, but as part of an ongoing commitment to work collaboratively toward justice through our scholarship and teaching. That is, land acknowledgements do not absolve us from responsibility to pursue material commitments to decolonization, like returning land to Indigenous communities or decolonizing our curricula, so we see this\u00a0 statement as a starting point for collective action.<\/p>\n<p>We also encourage SIGDOC participants to learn more about current Indigenous research, organizing, and community building in the area, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">George Mason University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mason360.gmu.edu\/naia\/home\/\">Native American and Indigenous Alliance<\/a><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/wgss.umd.edu\/research\/ifl\">Indigenous Futures Lab<\/a> at the University of Maryland<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aisdc.org\/\">American Indian Society of Washington DC<\/a><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/indigeneity.georgetown.edu\/\">Indigenous Studies Working Group<\/a> at Georgetown University<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">These guides:\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">City of Arlington\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stayarlington.com\/blog\/arlingtons-native-american-history\/\">Native American History<\/a><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">City of Alexandria\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandriava.gov\/cultural-history\/indigenous-peoples-virginia-indians-and-alexandria\">Indigenous Peoples, Virginia Indians, and Alexandria<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While you are in DC\/Maryland\/Virginia, you may also consider learning about Native and Indigenous history through institutes and museums in the area, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/museums\/american-indian-museum\">National Museum of the American Indian<\/a>.
